Kidsgrove Pensioners not lonely this Christmas

Deputy Mayor Councillor Kyle Robinson sings Rock DJ by Robbie Williams for Kidsgrove Pensioners.

Last night residents of The Meadows Sheltered housing in Kidsgrove were treated to a Christmas Karaoke Party and lunch.  John Light and the residents committee set up the party to give all the pensioners a chance to get out of their flats and celebrate Christmas in style.  Bingo and a raffle offered the pensioners a chance to win Christmas presents wrapped up ready to go under the tree.  Residents who don’t have the opportunity of socialising on a regular basis thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Residents sing a selection of hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s!

It’s important to remember that more than half a million pensioners will be at home alone this year without any visits from family and friends and only the TV to keep them company. Surveys reveal the depth of isolation affecting many over-65s, whose wellbeing is at greater risk during the winter.  Even in relatively mild winters, there are around 8,000 extra deaths for every one degree drop in average temperature.

Spiraling energy bills, the severe cold snap affecting much of the country and poor eating habits pose threats to their health, but charities also want people to make time to care for their emotional needs.

The residents even made their own table decorations.

So remember when you are having a fantastic time with family and friends, all cosy by your fires and eating lots of food, stop and think about those pensioners who are less well off.  People ask me why I spend so much time at Christmas with old people.  My answer is that they are great company and it’s nice to see them enjoy Christmas like everybody else.

So a big thanks to John Light and the residents committee for making these celebrations and social evenings possible.  You all deserve a gold star but not the one off the top of the tree of course.
