Your Community Centre

The popular Butt Lane Community Centre.

Newcastle Borough Council is currently carrying out a review of all its community centres across the borough.  This does not mean the council is going to close down your community centre like in stoke so let’s be clear on that point.  As you are more than likely aware councils are facing a financial squeeze imposed by central government.  It is imperative that the Borough Council ensures services it delivers not only meet the needs of our communities but are also value for money.

The review will hopefully look at the following issues:

  • Ensure all centres have an equal access to resources.
  • Provide continuously improving community facilities and centres which meet local need and achieve the aspirations of neighbourhoods.
  • Achieve management of buildings and centres by having agreed leases in place with all community centres by April 2013.
  • Achieve a better quality of service by ensuring community centres are fit for purpose – this will be determined by use, user views, community aspirations and building quality.
  • Develop capacity and maximise resources through increased support to volunteers and community centre management committees.  This should help centres access external funding.
  • Provide a more diverse range of activities being delivered from community centres.
  • Explore transferring council assets to community groups where it is appropriate.

If you would like to take part in a survey that the council has set up regarding community centre usage please click the link below and fill out the online form.  This will help a task group to understand what people use our centres for and what they would like to see improved.  Your opinion and input is very much valued.

Many thanks

Councillor Kyle Robinson

A Butt Lane Christmas Cracker

The Butt Lane Community centre this afternoon held its pensioners light lunch Christmas special. Over 40 pensioners tucked into winter vegetable soup, festive sandwiches, mince pies and coffee whilst listening to Christmassy music and playing bingo.  The Management Committee at the community centre are doing their best to reach out to the community to open the doors to everyone young and old.

Butt_Lane_Community_Centre_Councillor_Kyle_RobinsonSylvia Dymond, a member of the management committee said: “Here at the centre we strive to offer the community a really good service but we always make sure there is an element of fun in everything we do. We welcome the support of community groups, organisations and councillors. Working together we can continue to offer fantastic events in the community for the benefit of every single person. No Christmas present would make me happier than seeing all these smiles.”

Butt_Lane_Community_Centre_Kyle_RobinsonThanks go to Councillor David Allport for doing such a fantastic job in the Kitchen and serving up this special treat. The Pensioners light lunch events will be continuing in the New Year and I will publish details of dates and times very soon. Thanks also to Jo and Elliot Ashton.

Many thanks
